
Penang International Dragon Boat Festival
Penang International Dragon Boat Festival (PIDF) is coming back to thrill! Teluk Pahang Dam will once again resound with the roars of spectators as over 30 local and international teams battle it out for the championship on this May.
Penang has the longest tradition of hosting dragon boat festivals in Malaysia, with this year’s PIDF making it’s 30th anniversary. Teams from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, US, New Zealand, Philippines, Indonesia and Dubai has confirmed their partition in the annual event, to be held from 23-24 May 2009. Racing will start from 9am onwards to 5pm in the evening.
Dragon boats are long, narrow, canoe-style boats with beautifully carved figureheads resembling a dragon. Penang is world famous for dragon boat races with the region’s first race held in 1956.
