Thaipusam Festival is one of major Hindu festivals. It is a fascinating Hindu festival that includes a parade of purification and cleansing rituals. Thaipusam in Penang isn’t just celebrate by the Hindus, in fact people of all races especially Chinese join in the Thaipusam celebrations over three days at the Waterfall Road. Devotees carry Kavadi or a colourfully decorated frame to Waterfall Gardens temple, near Penang Botanic Gardens. Some devotees pierce cheeks or tongues with spikes and skewers in show of penance. They seem to know no pains as if in entrance. Some devotees will start fasting a month or two before Thaipusam. They will follow strictly a vegetarian diet and some even sleep on the hard floor for months preparing themselves for the day.
The parade is a spectacular sight of colour, calture, religious submission and physical endurance. An event not to be missed, devotees come fullfill your personal pledges and tourist come an experience first hand this wondeful festival.
